Hi,

I am running Ubuntu Linux 11.10 Desktop edition. whenever i attach the 3G USB Modem to the USB Port, the Network Manager Applet does not connect automatically inspite of enabling check box for connecting automatically . I need to unmount and then mount and then it gets intiated and then click on the
network connection which in this case is Airtel Default (Airtel HSPA) under Mobile Broadband in Network Manager Applet to connect to internet.

3G USB Internet Modem :- Airtel 3G USB modem 7.2 Mbps – E1731Bu-1(Mobile Broadband)

More Detailed Information -> http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1255323/ and let me know if you need more information to resolve this issue.

Regards,

Kaushal

The usb_modeswitch 'data base' in your distribution is not up to date.

The mode switch does succeed, but the target USB ID of the modem which the program is looking for has not been included yet in your version of the usb_modeswitch data package.

usb_modeswitch needs this for attaching the serial driver to the modem if the driver does not know the modem ID. In your case though, the kernel seems to know the modem and the driver is loading.

In short: despite the "fail" result from usb_modeswitch, your modem is ready to use, indicated by lines like this:
usb 2-1.3: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0

Your problem is likely related to the modem-manager/Network Manager ensemble.

Josh,

Does this mean, i need to update the modemmanager or network manager packages on Ubuntu 11.10? correct me if i am understanding you correctly.

kaushal@kaushal-laptop:~$ dpkg -l | grep network-manager
ii network-manager 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu5.2 network management framework (daemon and userspace tools)
ii network-manager-gnome 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu6.1 network management framework (GNOME frontend)
ii network-manager-pptp 0.9.0-0ubuntu2 network management framework (PPTP plugin core)
ii network-manager-pptp-gnome 0.9.0-0ubuntu2 network management framework (PPTP plugin GNOME GUI)
kaushal@kaushal-laptop:~$ dpkg -l | grep modemmanager
ii modemmanager 0.5-1ubuntu1.1 D-Bus service for managing modems
kaushal@kaushal-laptop:~$

Please suggest further.

The Ubuntu support forums would be a more appropriate place to help with that. I'm not very familiar with distribution-related stuff.
