ZTE MF626i help needed

Post by gregwilkins » 19 Jul 2010, 06:27

I'm trying to get a Telstra Turbo NEXT G netork USB modem (MF626i) working on
ubuntu 10.04 booted from wubi on a lenovo thinkpad w510
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The modem works fine on windows-7

I've tried to follow the trouble shooting, but it appears things have changed a little bit
eg there is no /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf to EnableLogging

So here is a log of what I have tried (first without a modeswitch and then with):

[518] apt-get purge usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data

inserted modem:

red LED, then blue LED after 20 seconds.

hmm maybe this is not a switch mode issue? maybe switchmode is not needed

I put a micro sd card into the modem and purged switchmode from my system.
If I inserted it with the eject rule disabled, same results (stuck in 2000).

If I re-enable the eject rule, then the eject appears to do the job and the microSD card is mounted
and I see lsusb

So it is seeing the GSM modem! but it still doesn't work :(
So maybe switching is not needed and this is a problem for the Mobile Broadband setup of ubuntu?

If this is so, can anybody point me to the right forum to go to next?

thanks

Your main problem is the outdated version of usb_modeswitch in Ubuntu 10.04. Don't ask me why they are not providing an update.
The current version is 1.1.3 and the data package has 20100707. The ZTE device handling has changed a bit since 1.1.0.

The problem with NetworkManager is known (see "How to use" on the usb_modeswitch doc page). Use one of the alternatives.

Using usb_modeswitch (the current version) for switching gives you a symbolic link to the correct serial port for connection; you get four on your modem but only one will work right.

I upgraded to 1.1.3 and it correctly detected the modem and created the nice link as you said it would.
Network manager and modemmanager still do not see it - so onto chasing their problems.

thanks
