To put it in a nutshell, the storage part of the device seems to make trouble in connection with the Linux driver. It is not affecting the serial connection directly, but may cause device resets once in a while, and these do affect the whole device and therefore the serial connection as well ...

In the last case description it even leads to ttyUSB port renumbering.

With the commands above you cut the connection between the storage driver and the device, disabling access to the storage part (which you don't need for connecting anyway). No more resets.

Well, I've given it a couple of days of trial and your suggestion appears to work -- I can actually stay connected for as long as I need to without any interruptions. Much, much better. Even if it is kind of a "kludge," who cares? The blasted thing does what it's supposed to!
