HUAWEI EC1261 not identified as modem in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid

Post by mainak » 12 Aug 2010, 22:52

I am in India and am trying to use Tata Photon+ Mobile Broadband Service. They have given me a HUAWEI EC1261 Device.

When I first connected this device the system identified it as a flash drive with "Tata Photon Plus" icon appearing on the desktop. The Network Manager was not identifying the modem.

Then I googled for the problem and installed
usb-modeswitch_1.1.3-1_i386.deb
and
usb-modeswitch-data_20100707-1_all.deb

I also edited the /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1446 file and added 140b to TargetProductList

Even AFTER making these changes, however, my modem is still not recognized. The only difference (compared to the first time I inserted the device) is that it is now no longer being recognized as a flash drive. If I do lsusb I am still getting

Bus 002 Device 006: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

as I was getting before...and Network Manager is not detecting any modems.

Please help me in getting the device recognized. I shall appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

O.K., let's see.

First, check if there is annother udev rule tampering with the device. "grep 1446 *" in "/lib/udev/rules.d".
Disable any existing rule by commenting it out

Second, turn on logging of the usb_modeswitch process. Edit "/etc/usb_modeswitch.conf" and set "EnableLogging" to 1.

Then re-plug your stick and have a look at the "/var/log" folder. You should get a log file named "usb_modeswitch" at the beginning.

Thank You Josh for your suggestions. I tried what you asked.

1.
pkr@pkr-laptop:~$ grep 1446* /lib/udev/rules.d/*
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libgphoto2-2.rules:ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b0", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0144", ENV{ID_GPHOTO2}="1", ENV{GPHOTO2_DRIVER}="proprietary", MODE="0664", GROUP="plugdev"
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libpisock9.rules:ATTRS{idVendor}=="054c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0144", GROUP="dialout", MODE="0664"
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules:ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1446", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"
pkr@pkr-laptop:~$

I edited the /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules file to comment out
# ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1446", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"

2. I turned on logging by editing /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf
EnableLogging=1
The log is at the bottom of the post.

Even after making these changes the modem is not being detected. And lsusb is showing
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
as before.

Moreover, now when I plug in the device, it is always being identified as a flash drive and an icon is appearing on the desktop.
I shall greatly appreciate your further advice.
Thanks!

Regarding the rules with "1446", I thought about any entry not related to the rule file of usb_modeswitch ... Sorry if I haven't been clear enough.
Of course you need the entry in "40-usb_modeswitch.rules", and now we know that there isn't any other rule which could interfere.

Anyway, try to add the "NeedResponse=1" option to the config file and see what happens. Leave the logging enabled.

oops! I am sorry that I misunderstood you in the first instance. I am a newbie to all this...

1. I have reverted back to the original /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules. So it now has

# Huawei, newer modems
ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1446", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'"

2. I have edited the /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf file so it now has

EnableLogging=1
NeedResponse=1

After these changes, unfortunately, still the same problem. The modem is not recognized and lsusb still shows

Bus 002 Device 004: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

The only difference is that now the device is not showing up as a flash drive.

The log file is below. Please advise.

Thanks!

I was being unprecise again. Too tired. Sorry.

The "NeedResponse=1" goes into the file "/etc/usb_modeswitch/12d1:1446" which is the device config file as opposed to the global config file.

THANK YOU JOSH!!
That worked! And I am writing this using the modem to connect to the Internet.

I can't thank you enough...I have been trying to get this thing to work for the better part of this week...and you solved it in no time. I wish I came across this forum earlier.

Anyway, one thing...even though the modem is working now, the device is still showing up on the desktop as a flash drive (and I can browse the folder...it contains setup programs etc.). Is that expected?

I am copying the last part of the log file at the bottom...just if it is of any help.

Thanks Again!

This not a bug, this is a feature. :)

On the early modems with drivers onboard, the pseudo CDROM was always gone after switching. Today, most devices make it reappear as one of the interfaces after switching. After all, they are composite devices which means they act like multiple USB gadgets, each with a different interface inside the same case. That's why you can have one USB stick with two or more different drivers binding to it.

Well, I'm glad you are "on the air" now ... 8)
